AJ Gibson Interview

AJ talks Godskitchen residencies, Slinky offers, his Dakota Records label, studio work, and of course partying!
How are you?
"I’m good yeah, busy … I’m concentrating a lot on the studio at the moment to be honest with you, erm 2/3 days a week, 12 hours a day, and then DJing, I’ve got a lot of paper work and I have a lot of records to listen to at home. I mean it’s pretty much a full time job from when I get up till when I go to bed, I don’t mind - I love it."
What’s with the label?
"Dakota has been up and running for around 6 months, but it’s not a very good time for the record industry at the moment, all a bit quite at the moment, starting to pick again now. We’ve been doing vocal trance although I love vocal trance I’m not sure it’s what the clubbers want at the moment, so we’re doing different things, a bit of German trance, a bit of sort of Dutch trance, a few cheeky bootlegs as well."
Was the label setup by you and Rob Wilder (Rockafellas)?
"No were going to do it originally but then Rob pulled out for reasons I can’t really go in to, it’s just me now, me and my engineer, I’m doing it with a company called Top Draw Music, their doing the day to day running of it down in London, I’m making the music and A & R’ing the music."
What is the pinnacle of your career so far
"Playing for Godskitchen around the world really…"
Best Party Ever?
"Probably this year’s Global Gathering 2002"
First break in the industry?
"I started doing commercial DJing and doing parties for Spiral Tribe & Circus Wars and stuff like that years and years ago, and moved in to a couple of clubs locally and then got to meet the guys from Godskitchen about six and a half years ago, and started doing some work for them, doing flyer distribution and stuff like that, started to get on really well with them and they offered me a residency.
Slinky have offered me a residency but I turned it down. I’m just loyal to GodsKitchen really and I don’t want to upset people, I do play for Slinky now regularly as a guest... I’m not sure Godskitchen would like me being a resident for Slinky."
What’s the best part of the Godskitchen residency for you?
"Entertaining people really, the Global Tours, I've been to Brazil, Finland, Japan, Kualalumpa, Malaysia, Philippines, Canada, Hong Kong."
What are your vices?
"Er, Partying!"
Do you record under your own name?
"Gibson & Roland is my recording name, my engineer’s called Mickey Roland. We done a few remixes, did one for London and that didn’t get signed, done an Ian Van Dahl one, still waiting for an answer on that, done quite a few bootlegs to be honest with you which I’m not gonna put my name to any of them, done a really big one that people begged me not to do but it works, people have actually found out and slated me for it, it just works in the clubs - but it’s a bit cheesy!"
What’s the most bizarre thing that has happened to you at an event?
"Doing something in Tokyo with Signum and Signum couldn’t get the plane and it wasn’t there fault so I ended up playing 6 hours on a Godskitchen tour, and basically the sound went off for half an hour all the lights went out and everything, there was nothing I could do, 5000 people in front of me, it very embarrassing."
What other countries cities do you like & why?
"I like Canada, it’s a well laid back place, I like Tokyo because it’s the opposite, I been to China a few times and that’s a bit weird, it’s just a bit weird really - thousands and thousands of people going in different direction, most bizarre."
What does the AJ in AJ Gibson stand for?
"AJ, the initials of my real name but I don’t divulge them."
What’s next for you?
"Playing for Slinky, still doing Gods tours and still playing for Gods, Singapore coming up for Godskitchen, DJing really, now spending as much time in the studio. Godskitchen and Frisky Northampton for New Year's Eve, quite a few enquiries as well. Knowing Godskitchen it’s gonna be big... The Honey Club’s just given me 2 dates for a few dates Feb 1st & the other one’s a Thursday in April."
