Anne Savage Interview

Clubbing-uk.com catch up with the gorgeous Queen of Hard Dance, Anne Savage to talk about who rocks her musical boat, the Caner Of The Year award, 'Faking It's' celloist come DJ, her knew label & working in Libraries.
What sort of DJ’s did you admire & look up to before you made it?
"My favourite DJ is no secret was Carl Cox, and then Sasha; just the whole Northern thing, he was really instrumental in making me want to DJ, and also from a techno side Jeff Mills, Ron Atkins, people like that, Frank De Wolf…"
Anne DJ’d with Coxy at her first UK residency back in 93 at the legendary Angels club night.. she continues..
"Carl Cox was a once a month residents at Angels, that’s where I started - We had him, Joey Beltram, Laurent Garnier like every month, I was thrown in at the deep end, it was awful really!"
What are your general musical influences?
"When I was growing up, I’m from a huge family, I’ve got four brothers and two sisters, and my older brothers were in to punk, when I was 15 I was really in to the Clash, like UK Subs, like proper punk. Then my elder sister was also in to Northern Soul, so I’ve also got a huge Northern Soul collection, people like Dobie Grey people like that, I used to sneak off to all nighters with her when I was like 14 really, I used to go to the Hacienda also with my sisters, I saw Madonna and Frankie Goes To Hollywood in 1985, but like Happy Mondays, New Order, and Joy Division, I was a huge fan of theirs and followed them round all over the place, everything, I’ve really got quite a broad respect for all kinds of music."
Aside from your interview with Clubbing-uk.com what’s been the highlight of your career so far?
"It was, I would think, playing at the dome New Years Eve last year was just really unbelievable, it was rammed 46,000 people - the biggest crowd I’d ever played to! I had a really good slot, it was 1-2.30am or something, I think I was on before Jules."
Are you still in touch with ‘Faking It’s Sian Evans?
"Yeah I am actually we’ve been in the studio a couple of times together, I’ve had her playing cello on a track, it’s not finished and I’m not quite sure how it’s gonna work, we’ve had a couple of attempts but it’s not gelling over, but I’m persevering with it, I speak to her alot every couple of weeks or so, she’s doing really well in Belfast, she’s got a residency there."
Did you and Lottie teach her everything she knows?
"I suppose so, obviously since the program she’s been at home practising like mad, and obviously learnt far more just through experience playing in the club environment, there’s so much difference to playing at home, and practising in front of us two, yeah me and Lottie taught her the 4x4 beat and how to mix and every thing."
What’s your best event of all time?
"Would probably be, that stands out in my mind, it’s going back a bit though, when I played with Sasha at Arc in Preston in 1993/94 - He was my hero at the time, Arc big raves in Leeds, I was like the new resident, I’d been playing there for about a year, it was unbelievable experience for me. Other than that was probably when me and Lisa Lashes played in South Africa, with Goldie & the Weather Girls, and Grace Jones, at this massive event for 32,000 people that was pretty cool as well."
Did you win a caner of the year award?
"No I was nominated but thankfully I didn’t win, Me and Lisa were nominated, in our bad old days, I was quite proud of it at the time actually. I remember I was sat in the car with my driver and I turned round tyo him and said "I’m up for an award, a music award" he was like "It’s got to be canner of the year award" cheeky bastard - hopefully I’ll improve on that, maybe some proper skills involved."
What’s your favourite cities and why?
"Toronto’s been a favourite of mine for years, I’ve been playing there for years, since 1996, I think I was one of the first girls there, I made it pretty big in Canada quite early, Canadians are just amazing. But recently I would say probably Melbourne, I love Melbourne, I love the atmosphere, I love the people, I love the club scene - it’s just amazing."
Can you tell us a bit more about the British Embassy?
"It was crazy, I got a phone call from the High Commission, and their like ‘we want you to play in this museum where we’re show casing British talent, we’d like you to come and DJ’, it was really quite bizarre because there was proper artists there and everything. I met all these really quite high up people in the British Consulate and they were all really really nice, they loved it ‘this crazy booming English music, it’s fantastic!’ They seemed to see that everyone else was enjoying themselves and tha was the main thing."
You’ve just returned from the Monster Madness in America what was that like? They banned all day glow objects or something?
"It’s just crazy, I think it was they were so paranoid about people having fancy dress outfits and spiky bits or things that could be used as weapons, so the main thing was they were banning serious costumes I think people were allowed in dressed up with masks on, they kinda took it a bit too far and people weren’t allowed to have glow sticks, I can’t actually remember if I saw any at all but they were mainly banning proper fancy dress costumes. It was really good. In LA I can’t stand it because you can’t smoke or drink when your playing, it’s because of the Over 21’s rule, if the DJ box is in the area classed as Under 21’s then you can’t drink, sometimes you can sneak a sip, you certainly can’t smoke, for me that’s horrific. Actually the last I was away I came back I felt positively healthy after like a serious groovy weekend because I hadn’t drunk or smoked! Other than that it was really good, a lot of people are saying the American scene is pretty dire at the moment but there was like 14,000 there all having it, it was pretty good."
I understand your working on a label?
"It’s in the process of up and running - I haven’t got name that’s the whole problem, it’s work in progress, if anyone can think of anything I’d be really happy to know about it. Some things I’ve been working on, trying to do a bit of what everyone knows me for doing, but also trying to do something a little bit different, something that’s an artistic release for me, also obviously stuff that everyone knows me for, that’ll be the jist of it really. I’m working with obviously Jay Pigeon who’s my other half he’s done stuff at OTR and his own label, other people I’ll work with James Lawson serious talent in the Hard Trance scene, hopefully BK, definitely James, and probably Project Mayhem as well."
If you weren’t a superstar DJ, what would you be?
"I’d be probably be working in a Library (no I’m kidding), I’m fanatical about bikes so I’d probably be a mechanic in a scooter shop! ooh very glamorous!"
Name your biggest vice?
"Probably Smoking, that’s horrific, lets find one that’s less grim. Biggest vice would be make up, I just buy shit loads of it every week, anything beauty product wise, I’m just a complete sucker, anything new out I have to have it! It’s got to stop buckets of the stuff in my bedroom that’s never been used."
