Basement Jaxx - Kish Kash

Basement Jaxx - Kish Kash image

Released 20th October 2003

"Good Luck" featuring the soul mama lyrics of Lisa Kekaula over vibrant electro-salsa flavoured D&B, as performed down at The Boutique in Brighton for Pete Tong and Radio 1.  The raw unadulterated Jaxx-house Missy Elliot fashion in "Right Here's The Spot", this time the hip-hop vocals are courtesy of the fabulous Meshell Ndegeocello over some electric carnival beats for a couple of dirty dance-floor fillers.

The boys team up with Mercury Music Prize Award Winner Dizzee Rascal on "Lucky Star"; "Jump up, Jump oooout!"... certainly a name that's caught some heavy, well deserved media coverage of recent months - he adds that un-cut London sound over some jumping hip-house bass-lines and a host of quirky flutes and electric horns.

As for "Supersonic" (featuring Totlyn Jackson) and samples The Campbell Brothers in a digitally re-mastered modern day Jazz funk phenomenon... As per "Plug It In", it's far from the norm (but then so are the Jaxx), this one controversially stars ex boy-band member JC Chasez - they all pass it off in a wonderful electro punk clash stylee. As with "Good Luck" they utilise the London Session Orchestra again for their strings, with Felix singing solo this time on a chilled breaks ballard tip straight from the heart.

Enter the slutty, guitar ridden punk world of the title track "Cish Cash" (although spelt differently) featuring Siouxsie Sioux, dirty electrified rock with an hard acid edge.  All before the exotic chill by Phoebe on "Tonight"; casting a somewhat more relaxed light in the basement of the Jaxx.

"Hot 'n Cold" is best described as a futuristic funky, yet sultry, electro jazz vibe with immaculate female vocals and quirky trademark breaks from one of London's (if not the world's) finest production duo's of all time.  Without a doubt, it was always going to be strong contender for 'album of the year 2003'.
