Cream @ Concorde 2 - Brighton

Review - 3rd August 2002

With the recent announcement about the ‘review on the weekly residency’ at the super club’s Liverpool home, we wanted to see if things were Business As Usual on other projects for the Cream crew.

Ironically advertised as the Cream Liverpool vs Brighton residents night…  Recent revelations indicate the northerners may not have a residency to return to!

First up were the Liverpool lads Paul Bleasdale and Paul Kane.  They done Paul Hillyer getting a sweat on as Paul Kane (far left) spaces out!Cream justice and got the place rocking from the start...  Both supplied fresh, chunky tech house grooves that went down like a stripper on stage at Manumission!  Michael Jackson’s classic "Thriller" remix got a huge response from both the crowd and security staff alike.  Smiles’ bouncing off faces everywhere, a job (very) well done.  The two Pauls will be keeping busy with Creamfields and Cream Cyprus dates and other worldwide appearances booked for later this year.

The set-up was slightly different from the opening night earlier in April this year, instead of two rooms, the back room was used as a chill out with the soundtrack supplied via the main arena’s DJ.  This worked well as there was more room to relax and dance, it also meant all the up for it movers were all dancing to the same beat.

Also in the Cream corner, representing the Brighton residents were local legends Paul Hillyer followed by Serge Santiago (Stompa Phunk).  The atmosphere by this time was glowing, the crowd was full of (magic) beans and the vibe was something similar to an Ibizan party.  So was the heat strangely enough, I managed to secure a spot near the open doors, for a little glimpse of fresh air every now and then, one lovely security member helped fan me down while her (just as lovely) colleague was dancing like a nutter whilst keeping everyone in/out with her Geri style kicks and turns.  Definitely in the wrong job we thinks!

Owen (Editor) with Paul Hillyer @ Cream, BrightonPaul the other one mate, (get it? Paul Hillyer!), fresh from his Southern FM show, kept with the quality pumping house music, getting down and dirty with the now rammed main room’s audience loving every minute of it…

After speaking with some of Cream’s DJs and events staff the issue with the end of their Saturday nights in Liverpool still remains a bit of a mystery, unsurprisingly there’s definitely a sense of disappointment amongst them.. (as with the rest of clubland)  We’ll keep you updated as and when we here more on that.

Serge Santiago @ Cream Brighton To round off proceedings was Brighton’s Serge Santiago.  Serge’s involved with the highly successful Stompa Phunk night at the Funky Budha Lounge and was recently invited to take part in a guest mix on Radio 1 courtesy of DJ Lottie.  His set had the place gagging for more.

Unfortunately it had to end eventually, 4am was the cut off, we left satisfied we’d had it to the best of our ability and had done some excellent networking (talking shite to enough cool people in essence).  Until another night of madness next month - Cream @ Concorde 2 has a larger than life party to offer to an intimate and cosmopolitan friendly crowd which shouldn’t be going anywhere other than up.

Hi to Dave (the door hogger) and Joe from Leeds, and a special big Birthday boy shout to Ian from London and Martyn from Birmingham whose stag weekend got very messy, non of which we encouraged of course!

Our thanks to all at Cream & the Concorde II crew.  Images courtesy of Special Agent Em.
