Creamfields UK 2002 Review

Creamfields UK signals the close of the UK’s summer clubbing festivals, their 5th annual event took place on Saturday 23rd August 2002.
After a brief 6/7 hour drive we finally arrive at Liverpool’s old airport to loose our Creamfields cherry in style. The layout comprised of ten arenas, a massive fun fair. The Xtreme Sport Half Pipe was full of skaters from around the world, all catching big air left, right and falling down in the centre -much to everyone’s amusement…
We bumped in to local lad called Yousef, who’d we’d heard was thrown out of a top Ibiza club the week before last, and he couldn’t even remember it?! ‘at a boy’… him and Mr Erick Morillo were filming a part of a series called Ibiza TV live at Creamfields 02 to be broadcast this October. (Make sure your folks aren’t watching!)
First up we caught Dave Pearce behind the Radio 1 outdoor stage. On route he’d broken down and only got here in time as a mate spotted him on the hard shoulder and gave him a lift up, when he arrived a few minutes before his set they wouldn’t let him on stage as he didn’t have the correct pass! Eventually some invisible red tape was removed and as always his music was euphoric, uplifting and purely ‘Banging mate’.
Live on Radio 1 always gets the crowd going along with good tunes that is, the biggest welcomes were for the massive Paul Masterson pres. Sushi 'The Earthshaker, ‘The Theme’ by Jurgen Vries and the Energy 52 'Cafe Del Mar' Bootleg mix. Afterwards Dave flew straight out to Ibiza the same day, an then came back the following day to Ministry in London for 2 of his Euphoria parties - pretty hardcore we think. Jules was next up also playing a stormer including his own Hi Gate ‘Stadium Rocks’ and Mikito’s ’Me Be She Be' tracks..
Argentina’s Hernan Catteneo played live on the Essential Mix for Pete Tong on Radio 1, his techy and tough trance and quality chunky beats tend towards the Danny Howells side of the scene and make him, as with Danny always a pleasure… With the likes of Oakey quoted as saying he’s "one of the best new DJs in the world" this Argentine certainly has something to be proud of…
On to Kosheen’s Drum & Bass / Breakbeat performance on the Cream outdoor stage, this was wicked with a capital W, the lead singer Sian Evans’ energy on stage was purely invigorating for the rest of us - she bounced around doing her thing with amazing talent, tracks like ‘Hide U’ and ‘Hungry’ getting the loudest response from the thousands of party goers. Kosheen comprising of Sian Evans, Markee Substance and Darren Decoder have just been nominated for another award, this time they’re up for Best New Artist at the Muzik Magazine Dance Awards 2002 taking place on October 15th.
Meanwhile Clubbing UK’s Disco Dave was obviously shaking his thang at the Subliminal Arena (the smallest of all the marquee’s strangely, holding a mere 3000?) with the likes of the label’s Richard F & the fantastic Jose Nunez and the French Funk-masters Phillippe Cerboneschi and Hubert Blanc-Francard aka Cassius pumping out the tunes early on. Sound of Violence from their new album (Au Reve) got a huge roar every-time it was played throughout the night.
Off to the rammed Passion arena, the Leicester based promoters seem to be going from strength to strength with their regular nights still attracting thousands and their marquee was wall to wall from start to finish, we squeezed in to catch Ferry Corsten rock the place with his Dutch style uplifting Trance!
The Bacardi BBar’s first trip to Creamfields proved as popular as ever, catering for peoples tastes in Latin drinks, and flavoured house courtesy of resident Basil Black II Basics with the musical high light being Dave Lee (aka Joey Negro/Jakatta) dropping his funky beats for a two hour special.
Before his set Dave was joined by PJ from Big Brother on the Bacardi Bar’s 5-aside football team for the friendly knockout tournament. Other participants were; the Brookside Boys, the Hollyoaks Girls! the Radio 1 team, Seb Fontaine, Fergie, Mixmag, Cream x10, Daily Star, Global Underground, Pacha & Bugged Out… but then - f*ck the football!
