DanceStar UK Awards 2002

DanceStar Awards 2002 image

Launched in 2000, DanceStar - The World Dance Music Awards are now the world's largest televised dance music event and were born out of the need to build an international, independent dance awards ceremony that would recognise the significant impact of the dance music culture worldwide. They celebrate the achievements of the main players - DJs, artists, record labels and clubs.

The show was hosted by the stunning Tess Daily from SM:tv and superstar DJ Boy George.  Some of the 18 award categories were presented by the likes of Caprice, Nell McAndrew, Maxim from the Prodigy, Miss Dynamite, Brian Dowling and Romeo and Lisa Mafia from So Solid Crew.  Live performances came from award winners Kosheen, Ian Van Dahl, Shy FX & T-power, Lasgo, Tim Deluxe. and Orbital.

‘Anybody who’s anybody in Dance Music will be there’ one national new paper wrote, so duty calls for Clubbing UK to attend!  Back stage at the DanceStar UK Awards 2002, Galaxy FM radio was broadcasting live over the net as the show was taking place with DJ’s Neil Bentley and Sundissential resident Paul Kershaw supplying the sound track for the cyber clubbing community.

In an exclusive array of interviews, DJ Tiesto (Best Club DJ winner) revealed his appreciation for Paul Oakenfold after he heard one of Tiesto’s mix tapes and then plugged him for worldwide bookings.  He’s about to set off on a tour of USA with David Bowie & Moby head-lining.

Tim Deluxe and Sam Obernik had just recovered from Glastonbury as had Fatboy Slim.  The Underwater label boss, Darren Emerson was talking about his next releases; "Ya’Self" by Mutiny will be followed by a track called "Taking Hold", Tim & Sam’s "It Just Won’t Do" was released 8th July to critical acclaim.  The next big thing from them is their "Underwater Episode 1" mix album, a double CD compilation mixed by Emerson & Deluxe.  Darren will also be playing at the Berlin Love Parade on Saturday 13th July.

Danny Tenaglia said "always have an open mind… listen to everything, listen to the anthem of anthems ‘Love Is The Message’ and listen to ‘Music Is The Answer’ and ‘Be Yourself’ is the name of our party, Peace".

Lasgo were proud of Belgium co-nominees Ian Van Dahl for winning best Trance Act and said "It’s fantastic - an honour to be here" after their live performance.

"We’re getting used to winning awards now" Diesel from X Press 2 jokes modestly… "when they’re voted for by the fans it is an honour" he adds.

Are the lyrics of ‘Lazy’ anything about you?

"the idea of Lazy came from David Byrne, he’d heard of a club (run by a friend of ours actually) called ‘Lazy Dog’ in West London and thought it would a great idea to write a dance song about being Lazy."  X Press 2 are currently having their studio built which should be completed by October, with an album to follow.  They revealed Mr Byrne's in the frame for another and exclusively announced Dita Mia (performing in Pacha with them this summer) will be collaborating on their next single.

Fatboy only managed to get here after Glastonbury when he was told he had to be there.  He picked up 2 awards on the night, Best Event for his Brighton Beach Party (see news for 2002 info) and Best Video (the same award he won in DanceStar USA), Norm still holds the record for the most amount of gongs at these awards, 6 in 3 years (not bad).  Commenting on his 2 Beach Party in Brighton "looking forward to it with intrepidation - if it’s raining it would be the worst disaster" - lets pray for sunshine then!

Andy Ruffel (C.E.O and Founder) said "the voting was website driven, we’ve had 1.5 million hits on our website in the last 2 and ½ weeks which ranks us amongst the top in the country and we’re pretty pleased about it… the main thing is the public decide… We have DanceStar Hong Kong launching soon" watch this space…

The awards will be broadcast to over 35 countries around the globe via MTV Europe and the "DanceStar 2002 Awards" compilation is out now.  Full list of 2002 winners below…
