Darren Hughes Interview

It's was off to Homelands 3 weeks early for a well deserved break from the office, we caught up Homelands and We Love Promoter Darren Hughes (previous co-founder of both Cream & Home club nights) for a chat about 'what is what', as well as Bedroom Bedlam competition winner turned Super Star DJ James Zabiela, before talking to Ozzy Osbourne's house DJ'ing son 'Louis' about various up and coming bits and bobs! Read on for their thoughts about this year's amazing 'We Love Homelands'.
Can you tell us how ‘We Love’ came about?
"I’ve been involved in running parties Sundays at Space for, this is the 5 years now, and it started out as ‘Home at Space’ because obviously we opened up Home and that went all sour. I didn’t really wanna come up with another brand as it were, it’s more that the We Love name came out of a kind of admission really that Sundays @ Space was the reason why people are going there. I just wanted to say ‘We Love Sundays @ Space’ really. It wasn’t setup with any grand plans to become another brand, and still hasn’t - and really, the sensibility behind it is to associate itself with things that already good. That’s essentially what We Love is…
"It’s a bit more, I hope anyway, to have a little bit more integrity and a bit more honesty, about the things you attach yourself to, and that’s kinda why it made more sense this year to attach itself to Homelands because the event was ready for, I guess a fine tuning, putting the spotlight on it, what was in my opinion what is good about the event and was has integrity and at the end of the day there’s only two types of music; good & bad. What we’ve tried to do is put together a ‘relevant’ event that’s full of quality.
"The event started with year one in 98 when it was Creamfields, and then I left Cream, and then I became partners with the Meanfidler which is why it became Homelands in 1999, this is our 5th year - it’s the 6th event, but this is it’s 5th year as it’s incarnation as Homelands".
Whose your favourite headline act at the event?
"Chemical Brothers, it’s very rare that they go out and DJ, off and on over the years I’ve had a long standing relationship with them, I was at college in Manchester when they were at college in Manchester. Them Justin Robertson myself, we were all there at the same time really, they’re good pals of mine and it’s very rare that they come and DJ. Them and probably Soul Wax (2 Many DJs), cause I’ve never heard them before (I’ve obviously got the albums on CD) and their production’s mega - I’m hoping there as good DJ’s as what they are producers."
Any problems with this year’s promotion?
"I wouldn’t say problems, but the winter really was spent after the event last year, (it’s always a great day out, it’s always a great event), but my feeling really was that we’d become just another dance event in the calendar... It wasn’t so much a problem but the issue was really how we were gonna deal with that and how we were gonna change it and make it more relevant? I think that the 3 or 4 key dance events that were on last year, were pretty much the same as each other. We really brain stormed it in the winter, and we really wanted to put an event together that we hoped was not gonna be copied, was not gonna be just another dance event and I’m hoping there’s a lot people who feel the same as me."
Do you know what the weather’s meant to be like? "Well who knows, you look at the long-term weather forecast and just cross your fingers, we’ll wait and see, obviously if you get great weather it’s a great feel good factor."
Can you enjoy the night yourself?
"I guess I’m on alert up until about 9/10 O’Clock at night and then I go missing, then I become a punter like everybody else. I can’t miss it you know - it’s what I do, I need to get stuck in there and have a good time like everybody else!"
