Dave Pearce Interview

With 15+ albums released to date and residencies @ Ministry Of Sound (London), Eden (Ibiza) and The Abyss (Aiya Napa) - it's been an exciting year for Dave Pearce and the Euphoria crew. We caught up with Dave to talk Hats, Nulife Remixing & his best event ever (so far)!
Dave would record shows for his pirate station from school sometimes recording sets with the school bell occasionally appearing in the background. Just after school he applied to an advert for 'DJ's to work abroad', to his surprise the job was at the legendry Studio 29 in Bombay, India. Upon his return he started working for BBC Radio London. Initially he was reading the news, travel and sports(?) before getting his first regular show on Thursday nights into Friday mornings called 'The Funk Fantasy'. He was then mingling with likes of Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles at the notorious Paradise Garage. After his success with two shows on BBC London he brought in Pete Tong and Gilles Peterson for Nite FM (a late night alternative) themed on underground house music emerging from the states. After the closure of BBC London, he helped backing the licensing of Kiss FM before eventually moving to the true giants of the airwaves, Radio 1...
Nulife Records was set up in 2000 and has had excellent hits with True Steppers ft Dane Bowers & Victoria Beckham's "Out Of Your Mind", "The Drill" by the Dirt Devils and Ian Van Dahl's "Will I", "Castles In The Sky" and their album "Ace" - but has Dave pondered about creating his own tracks?
"I get fairly involved in the remix side of our Nulife tracks, often going in the studio with remixers to get the effect we are looking, I am keen to do my own track sometime. I get approached by quite a lot of names to do a collaboration." he comments.
Dave has sold in excess of ¾ million copies of various compilations including the latest in the Euphoria collection, being a founding member of Nulife, Eddie Short (founder of the Euphoria brand) approached Dave to join the team. "It fitted perfectly with the style I play and the ethos of the nights that I put on, people just associated me with playing Dance Anthems not knowing my live set is different from the radio stuff I do."
With many albums released and residencies in London, Ibiza & Aiya Napa where next for Dave Pearce & Euphoria? "Well later this year (2002) I am playing Slinky, Hotdog, Tall Trees with Too Kinky, Escape in Swansea etc and I kick off a US tour at the beginning of October starting in New York."
What's been the best Euphoria party you've experienced?
"Wow! That’s a tuff call. I guess the first party at Ministry of Sound was special cause we proved that a big trance night in London would work and we had 2,000 people queuing round the block."
What's your all time favorite music event ever? "Ministry of Sound @ the Dome last year with 50,000 people going mad, that was probably the definition of Euphoria although I was shitting myself at the same time!" (we were there!)
What's the story with your hats? "I’ve been wearing them since I was a hip hop kid - its kinda my trademark now."
Cheers Dave - keeping on rolling the fat one's! (if you need a hand toking them let us know)... for more info check out his site below.
