Hed Kandi - Twisted Disco 57

Released 27th March 2006
Hed Kandi drop the third release of the year (most recently being "Hed Kandi - World Series live Paris" mix album) and it's another instalment of Twisted Disco for 2006...the chance for Kandi to move away from shiny choruses and disco grooves and focus on the harder-edged, more electro-tinged tunes. As with the other albums in the series, this is unmixed and contains full length 12" versions all hand picked by Team Kandi...this year's selection features tracks and remixes from Tocadisco, Mylo, Freeform Five, Joey Negro, The Egg and Morillo.
CD1 kicks off with Sander Kleinenberg's remix of "Mylo & Freeform Five - Muscle Car"... featured on the recent single release of the track it was nice to have the full length version here. Some camped up vocals via Tiga follow with Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters fame for "You Gonna Want Me", a body-popping electro-house cut. Nice use of synths here and nice to hear that Tiga’s dulcet tones. Wez Clarke, Wonderland Avenue and Cajmere follow... Wonderland Avenue's "White Horse" is the sure fire stand-out track by far.
There's also a new version of Armand Van Helden "My My My" on here too by Joy Kitikonti, who does an excellent funky remix of it. The real surprise here is The Knife "Heartbeats" remixed by Rex The Dog, yep, the same mut who done remixes for JX (Restless), The Prodigy (Girls) and Mylo (Drop The Pressure). This mix isn't your typical Rex remix as it slows down the beats and contains some extra cool effects as well.
CD2 is where tribal and electro collide really. Opening up with Rex again on "Prototype". Akabu and Noir follow. The aforementioned Akabu is remixed by Joey Negro, who takes the track on a spacey disco trip. Noir is testament to house music's power with the line "Its all about house music and it always will be". Quite right too.
Erick Morillo teams up with Leslie Carter for a track called "Waiting In The Darkness", given the once over by Superchumbo who takes it in an even more tribal direction. Another mention must be given over to The Egg, who feature twice on this album. "Walking Away" is on the first disc and on the second, we have "The Wall" (remixed by Mylo). This is a computer-gone-mad edit, it’s quite strange in places but I liked it. Shiny Grey "Why" is another good track in my humble opinion, with its "Sweet Dreams" sample and dubby overtones it works a treat. Tiga's monumental version of LCD Soundsystem's "Tribulations" finishes the album in fine style...a nice rock-inspired and almost trancey, version.
I've missed some tracks out...I've done that on purpose so you can discover them for yourselves. Having said that, I thought this edition of Twisted Disco was okay... not great or boundary breaking but okay. Sure if it pushes the right buttons and it makes butts move, job done I guess.
