Hybrid - Morning Sci-fi

Hybrid - Morning Scifi image

Released 16th August 2003

Mike Trueman (aka Jaded Little Pill) records mainly with Chris Healings and Lee Mullins as Swansea-based progressive breaks group Hybrid.  They met whilst clubbing there over 7 years ago.  After bonding over Trueman's house remix of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall", they've since remixed over 90 tunes by artists such as Carl Cox, Jazzy Jeff, Alanis Morissette and The Future Sound of London amongst many others.  Their debut album, "Wide Angle" was received to mass critical acclaim throughout the industry and "Morning SciFi" is likely to do the same.

The near 10 minute extravaganza that is "True To Form"* which features New Order's Peter Hook on bass and production, and is a lively start to the album. If this hasn't been picked up for the next James Bond movie (breaks) score then it certainly should be.  It leads on to the mysterious low down, hi-fi sounds of "Know Your Enemy" and "Marrakech".

By number six, "Visable Noise" things have reached tech-house levels for the welsh wizards as with "We Are In Control" an advanced, retro piece of work.   "Steal You Away" gets things much more laid back and just as you're about to pop out and put the kettle on - wham, "Gravastar" struts right on in there - blasted by many a noble DJ at Homelands and regularly down at the Boutique in Brighton these guys deliver quality just like their growing reputation.

"Out Of The Dark" has a tasty rolling drum beat with some calming hi-hat action, pianos and strings added to a, well rather large bass-line and it more than does the trick.  It all ends with the brilliantly beautiful 'Blackout' which mixes dub and Balearic chill perfectly.

When it comes to Hybrid, simply believe what you here, you do need to check them out.

*Here we catch up with Hybrid @ Radio 1's Maida Vale Studios recording a session with the help from the 12 piece string band standing by!!!
