James Zabiela Interview

(Super Star DJ aged 23 - 2004)

It was off to Homelands 3 weeks early for a well deserved break from the office, we caught up with Homelands and 'We Love' Promoter Darren Hughes (previous co-founder of both Cream & Home club nights) for a chat about 'what is what', as well as Bedroom Bedlam competition winner turned Super Star DJ James Zabiela, before talking to Ozzy Osbournes House DJ'ing son 'Louis' about various up and coming bits and bobs! Read on for their thoughts about this year's amazing 'We Love Homelands'.James Zabelia image

Have you got your Homelands set planned out?
"I always sort improvise, but I think DJing these days is more than playing little records, like their focus on the live thing. I always muck around with 3 decks, scratching and effects, I use those Pioneer CD 1000’s, edit tracks live, put your little memory card in - it’s got to be more about just playing records now."

Do you know your set time yet?
"I’m signed to Sasha’s DJ agency so normally I play before or after him. I’ve got this theory; if it’s rainy then I wanna play in the afternoon cause everyone will be inside, and if it’s sunny then I wanna play when it gets really cold."

What else have you been up to?
"I’ve just done a remix for End Recordings in London and I done a remix for Royksopp - I’m just playing out loads and doing a mix compilation as well."

Have you got any residencies?
"I’m actually starting a residency for Darren at Space in Ibiza, it’s gonna be like a fortnightly thing every other week. It’s a dream come true, it’s amazing!"

What else do you hope to achieve?
"If I can just keep doing what I’m doing now I’ll be happy."

How did you get noticed?
"It started off when I gave a mix tape to Lee Burridge, and it got in the hands of Sasha he listened to the tape, and Muzik Magazine also (the Bedroom Bedlam thing)."
