Juliet Interview

Clubbing UK finally tracks down the young Philly Juliet after her phenomenal success at Radio 1's beach party on Nikki Beach at this year's Winter Music Conference.  After tearing down the stage with her live Radio 1 debut with Jacques Lu Cont "Avalon", the crowd went wild singing alongside her all the way.  Now back on British soil, she plans to grow her US roots from greener grass.

Juliet perfoming Avalon - Miami 2005 How did the Juliet project with Jaques Le Cont come about?
"When I first met Stuart, I was looking for a producer and rumor had it he was looking for a muse, we hit it off too easily. He then took off with Zoot Woman and I started working with others, wishing on anything that looked like a star he'd come back to London. Soon as he had a night off, I showed up at his house and would not leave until he agreed to take over the world with me."

How would you describe the Juliet sound?
"Jacques saturday special...  A hybrid of dance, electronica, & adolescent rock for my benefit."

Does Stuart stick to writing the tunes and you to writing the lyrics or do you contribute to each others musical areas along the way?
"Stuart creates the music, I write melodies and words, although we constantly aid and inspire each other... its a bit like tennis."

With Radio 1 legend Pete Tong calling "Avalon" his "fave new tune" and awarding it Essential New Tune status on his show, how does it feel knowing how possibly millions of people were instantly grooving to your debut track?
"like summer in the middle of a deep freeze."

Who do you cite as your major influences (both early and present day)?
"The Nature Channel, Daft Punk, Talking Heads, Disney, My Bloody Valentine, Led Zepplin, yellow brick roads, Radiohead, Peter Gabriel, life."

Juliet what’s life like in Phili, how does the scene compare to the UK’s?
"The trouble with Philly is, it's too close to NYC which makes it an underdog by default.  The dominate scene is a hipsters paradise- dime a dozen indie rockers & recycled shockers overshadow some brilliant experimental artist/DJs on the fringe.

There isn't much of a club scene, most kids who care go right to NYC for nights out. The UK is much different, I appreciate the wide spread acceptance and support of electronic/dance music, and you've got Pete Tong.  Having only just moved here, the scene appears symbiotic, maybe in a few weeks I'll have a better understanding - the grass is still very green."

Have you either performed or planned any live dates yet? How will this work and affect the final output?
"I did the last leg of the Duran Duran tour in the US a few weeks ago with a full on band that knew how to rock. I'm over here putting my real band together and all I will say is, I live to play live."

I presume you’re attending Miami & Ibiza this year? Can we expect some Juliet business to accompany the soundtrack?
"Both. Although Miami was a month ago (that's it? it feels like years ago) Ibiza is what I'm waiting for.. I believe the hype."

What advice would you give to struggling musicians and vocalists out there?
"anything worth doing is going to be difficult, don't give up."
