Magna New Years Eve 2003 Review

Magna New Years Eve 2003 Review image

It’s official, the face of clubbing has changed forever...

Tidy - Magna ariel view image‘Bubbles’ have replaced ‘arenas’, ‘zones’ have replaced ‘rooms’. Think big, then double it, and you still won’t come close. What am I talking about? I’m talking about the phenomenon that is Magna 7, the brainchild of the only team who really know how to throw a bash with a difference; the Tidy team.

We thought the Tidy Weekenders were a wacky idea but the Tidy Boys and their dedicated Tidy workforce threw a New Year’s Eve to remember in Sheffield at, what can only be described as a huge disused factory warehouse.

We entered the corrugated metal giant via the back entrance and soon found ourselves deep in the core of the innovative venue.

We took a lift to the main floor. I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited about a lift. I’ve never taken one to a dance arena before, but I wanted to put this one in my fluffy backpack and take it home with me. I pondered, why do you need such a contraption when thousands of spanked cyberkids are climbing the walls anyway?

Soon we were on the next floor, bumbling through the music maze in an attempt to find the main zone. One of the things that hit me, was how cold it was between zones. The ‘Vicious Circle’ zone even had huge overhead heaters to banish the chilly night air.

When we found the Tidy zone, we knew we were home. The atmosphere was already being powered - up by deckmaster Guyver. Smiles were omnipresent as the euphoria catalysed our adrenaline release. Meanwhile, ‘Energy’ was definitely the word on everyone’s lips in the hardcore bubble. Kevin Energy was stoking the flames of a fired-up crowd. Our feet got lost in the bubble and carried through the moist air.

In the funky bubble we found ourselves bobbing over the sassy soundwaves with ease. Confused faces were aplenty when The Darkness’ debut single blasted out! But grins soon spread as the phat funky flavour of the remix captured us in its feel-good vibe.

But the highlight of the night was without a doubt, the Tidy Boys’ set. Genius vinyl selection coupled with outstanding technical ability, meant we were treated to an unforgettable build-up to midnight.

Tracks which made 2003 for so many dedicated hard house followers, whipped us into a frenzy. Memories of Tidy Weekenders, Sundissential and Evolution soon came flooding back along with a fresh dose of serotonin. The track dropped as the first tune of 2004 (after the hard house version of ‘Auld Lang Syne’!) was the ‘Heavens Cry’ anthem ‘Till Tears Do Us Part’. Well, let’s be honest, there is no other way to bring in the New Year.
