MYNC Project Interview

"for me it was only a matter of time before a big clubbing brand in the UK was associated with terrorism"
The MYNC Project have been DJing/producing together since their early days at Passion’s Redroom in Coalville back in 99. The DJ duo comprising of Mark Brown and Nick Corelli paired up after an all inspiring trip to Miami’s WMC, upon their return they started the Redroom Sessions with headline guests like Radio 1’s
Pete Tong,
Danny Rampling and Erick Morillo amongst others …
Danny Rampling was so impressed with the MYNC sets he’d summoned the lads to play on his national "Love Groove Dance Party" show. Having only been DJing together for a year, their dirty funk-driven, jackin acid-house sets were now being played to the nation; "I even got my mum to tune in and she loved it!" says Nick.
Their varying and diverse range of influences are all too apparent with Nick’s rock/alternative background (quoting acts like Depeche Mode and Trent Resnor) and Mark’s funk based ethics like Quincy Jones, compliment each other perfectly…
Running their successful label CR2 Records and having just brought a club in their hometown of Loughborough we had plenty to chat about… We catch up with them after their storming set at Hi Fi South to see whas up with the UK’s hottest DJ partnership…
How are you and what have you been up to?
Mark: "Lots of production work, running the label CR2, shot our video for our single (first video). It’s out on MTV playlist now, it’s quite weird really cause we normally make records for other people for our label so it’s quite weird to do our own one… Small cameo roles, porno stars!"
Nick: "I’m a method actor obviously… there’s a method to my acting."
How did it feel to get working on a track with Danny Rampling?
Mark: "It was really good actually; Danny was obviously one of the first people that kind of introduced us into house music and gave us our first break on Radio 1 which lead to an Essential Mix…"
Nick: "We just got together and decided to make an acid house record, he’s from original acid-house days and we’re loving the whole acid vibe so we said ‘lets do this’. Not a conscious effort but we thought we might surprise people with what we did, rather than doing a vocal house record…"
Have you eaten at his restaurant yet?
Mark: "No, but we have got a table reserved for life apparently."
Would you say DJing at Passion was your first substantial break?
Nick: "Yeah it was a weekly thing and it was a really good vibe, I was there 8 years - we kinda broke through there really, we did the first compilation album."
Is that where you first teamed up?
Nick: "Mark used to play as a guest and then it got to a point where we both went to Miami one year, the owners from Passion came out with us and they heard Erick Morillo and the Constipated Monkeys and they basically said ‘we can do this back in England’, we kinda said alright cool. When we got back we started booking all these big American guests and we were the natural residents."
As promoters, getting acquainted with Morillo, Rampling and Tongy can’t have harmed your chances of progressing… do you think it helped?
Mark: "Obviously we know them as friends now, we never really used that kind of relationship to get our booking or to get into different things."
Nick: "We liked to earn things on merit, I’d never ever asked anyone for a gig (not in a bad way), I’d always push myself but I’d rather get asked or invited to do it."
What other unfulfilled ambitions do you have left?
Nick: "I’ve just brought a nightclub (in my hometown Loughborough - it’s open now but I haven’t actually officially taken it over yet) so I’m starting on that… oh and to work with Prince as well!"
Mark: "I think keep developing the label and we’ve got a great team of people there now, it’s really rewarding for me to be able to work with up and coming people, show them the way we work, show them the ropes and give them experience. Keep developing that really, set up a publishing company."
What do you make of the recent press about terrorism at MOS?
Mark: "I think it’s good that they caught the people that were actually plotting to do it. There’s been a lot of negative talk but the main thing is the people have been caught. We’re residents there for Pete’s night Pure, for me it was only a matter of time before a big clubbing brand in the UK was associated with terrorism. People should just get behind the brand and keep supporting the club."
Which remix is your favourite and why?
Nick: "Musically the thing we done for Narcotic Thrust was the most musical thing we’ve done, but in a club point of view I think the Mark Knight remix of ‘Insatiable’ was one of the biggest responses."
What would say are your top clubbing cities?
Mark: "I think Sydney’s really good, Melbourne."
Nick: "I still think Ibiza town really good, Slovenia’s brilliant - it’s just a crazy place."
For anyone else wondering what the hell was that last tune?
Mark: "Freddie Le Grande? It’s coming out on our label CR2, it’s weird - a lot of hip-hop DJs have been playing the record as well, obviously with the references to Detroit (Eminem’s from Detroit), so yeah we think that’s gonna be a really big track for the summer and the reaction was wicked."
MYNC Project featuring Abigail Bailey "Something On My Mind" is released on 10th July (a day before Nick’s birthday) and the lads are also currently working on the follow-up record with Rampling so keep 'em peeled.
