Renaissance 10th Birthday @ Pacha London

Part II - 14 September 2002

On route to London’s premier night spot, we were chauffeur driven in a luxury Chrysler people carrier thing courtesy of YourDriver.co.uk.  Already miffed by the class of travel and Peter (the friendly company M.D) whips down a mini TV in the back? Damn, the night was gonna get better by the mile, literally…

Looking for the obvious tag of Pacha outside the former SW1 Club, the only thing that confirmed this could be Renaissance @ Pacha London was the queues of immaculately dressed clubbers lining the building…  Inside was a lot more trademark Pacha, flash, extravagant and glamorous immediately springs to mind.  The split levelled main room has a balcony circulating the whole dance floor, with dark wooden beams and long leafy plants scatted around the venue.  Add some Old Renaissance Flyers on massive back drops and throw in some strictly party people and voila! The Americans discover the joy of UK licensing laws.

Rasta Dave and I mingled like the men of international mystery we later found out we were, within the first hour we’d spoken to a gorgeous Brazilian chick with an un-pronounceable name, a lovely Australian girl called Buffy and a young nutter from Norway (advising me on how I had to travel and how she’d kick the shit out of the guy who sold her an Asprin earlier for £10?), ooh and Sarah all the way from Eastbourne!…

Off we trot to scope the venue and get our head rounds the profit margin on the £4 bottle of Bud we just brought, and we find a reasonably secluded spot on the balcony.  A whiff of green in the air and two American girls from Virginia floated round the corner towards it like Tom & Jerry smelling Mama’s food cooking… Gelya and Amanda were as far as I make out on some sort of holiday, another valid excuse for dancing all night like loons or more commonly known as ‘ave’ing it’!

Our Renaissance birthday soundtrack was supplied initially by the mighty Groove Armada duo.  Their dirty chunky tech-house tip was being lapped up by Carnival Dancers @ Pacha Londoneveryone, as were the 300 mini birthday cake’s provided by Renaissance!  Their Superstylin’ track got one of the biggest responses in the main room, with the Brazilian dancers (as used by Basement Jaxx) were in full(?) costume with their green and yellow leafed outfits, enhancing their bodies and showing a couple of great arses!

The bars and bar staff were both bold and attractive, at one point in the night me and a random clubber dude had a ‘dance-off’ with the barmaids!  F*ck the drinks eh?  It was after this Renaissance worshiper, Ian from Manchester offered me one of his many drinks vouchers! How nice! He was keen to show off their especially made Renaissance 10th Birthday @ Pacha Londonshirts with ‘Renaissance 1992-2002’ printed on the backs… cheers for that lads!

In the funky back room The Laundry Tag Team, were busy at work mixing the filtered disco house for the funkier guests.  Some people chilling out had found the prime spot in here, an area that looked like a massive bed at the back of the room, with people lounging all over it, all very cosy..

Back in the main room, Renaissance faithful Danny Howells was gracing the decks with his deep and tribal prog beats causing the same electric reaction he used to cause back in the day at the Pier Pressure nights on Hastings Pier when I was a nipper… Loads of people were commenting on his set, so if you’ve never heard this man before - experience it at your next opportunity!

Renaissance's Brett, ave'ing it on the tables @ Pacha LondonUp on the balcony we came across Renaissance’s Brett causing a stir by strutting his stuff on the tables, after getting down (or up) on the tables with a few honeys, Brett vacated just before security asked everyone to get down! Tut tut Brett!

Danny dropped a classic "Thriller" remix towards the end of his set, as always getting an incredible rush from the crowd, encompassing a fresh n funky feel from him, catering for everyone’s tastes and rocking the house till close at 5am, when we gracefully retired and hunted for a bargain return taxi…

An absolutely wicked night, excellent party atmosphere with quality house music and quality people, Happy Birthday to Renaissance!   Our mission for the night very much accomplished!  Our thanks to Brett and all at Renaissance, and hi to all the lovely people we chatted to.

Renaissance can still be caught @ The Cross in London once a month.  On Saturday 28th September Dave Seaman and Nigel Dawson are present.  The 26th October sees Argentine Hernan Cattaneo with Paul Jackson playing a 5 hour set.  November 30th means Graeme Park will also be doing the 5 hour thang... any more information call 0115 910 1111.
