Rioparade 2004 review

For 'love, peace and tolerance' in the heart of Rio de Janeiro - Carnival of Rio 2004!
Music plays an important role in the 10 million metropolis. Carnivals and Samba made Rio world-famous. Dancing outdoors, street-parades with adorned procession vehicles and partying have a great tradition here. Thus, it’s not surprising that the roots of the Love - and Street-parade lead back to the carnival. The RioParade brings this philosophy back to its roots. With new musical influences, the RioParade 2004 will become an interesting mix between South American party culture and electronic tones from all over the world. The multicultural city of Rio de Janeiro is ideal for this event of international techno culture.
The fundamental idea was to bring back the electronic parade to the ideologically place of birth of all the parades. As Dr. Motte in 1989 organized his first Loveparade, he was inspired by the carnival in Rio de Janeiro. After 14 years, Adrian Halter a.k.a. A.J Crypt brought back Dr. Motte's idea back to its roots... Without a second to lose, our super scout/uber-babe/clubland queen Lisa Loco catches up with the organiser for a quick chat!
LL: With 200,000 party people attending the 2003 RioParade and you DJ'ing to 50,000 - wasn't it all bit overwhelming?
AH: "After three and a half year of hard work and all the difficulties we had to bear (postponing of the date and route etc.), this day was the most emotional of my life. It was indeed overwhelming for me to see 200,000 people dancing in the streets (which is more than one day at the Rio carnival or at the cup final of Brazilian soccer,) in a city where the electronic music scene is quite small. It was also satisfying for me to show the success story to all the critics who buried the project after the postponing."
LL: Is the RioParade only Techno music?AH: "Yes, let's say 'electronic' music. We don't play Hip-Hop or Samba at the RioParade, but a Drum 'n Bass - Bossa Nova or Progressive - Samba synthesis is one of the exciting part of the Brazilian dance scene."
LL: Dr. Motte attended your 2003 RioParade stating "The circle has been closed - this is phenomenal!" That must have been a moving moment for you?
AH: "Yes absolutely. I really respect the great work he did with the Loveparade and still does. He was one of the guys who gave electronic music much media publicity and opened the doors for the triumphant procession of music. For him the RioParade was also a special day, because he was first inspired by the carnival of Rio (the floats are a Brazilian invention!) The RioParade took place on the street where the first carnival ever was set up (Rio Branco) and that's why he said, "The circle has been closed".
