Slinky Bournemouth Review - Friday 23rd May 2003
It's the start of May bank holiday weekend and Slinky HQ in Bournemouth is the destination. With one of the true Queens of Hard Dance playing plenty other clubbers obviously thought the same, all heading for the well renowned Opera House.
Situated in a pedestrian precinct and seemingly quiet on the outside, you only have to get through the doors of the club to feel the vibe... thumping mate! The doormen must have been feeling this too as they were courteous and even managed a smile, you don't see that often enough in Brighton!
Walking into the main room you could tell it wasn't the busiest night The Opera House has ever seen - the balconies were all roped off, but boy what an atmosphere. Going down the stairwell to the dance floor there were bodies everywhere bouncing to the beat (so that's where everyone was)! The dress code was distinctly Slinky, from casual to smart, to just plain outrageous with even the occasional near naked body. The main order of the night seemed to be anything glowing under UV light.
After mission one was completed, checking out the general ethos of the place and stocking up on alcohol - it was time for mission two. VIP lounge action. Situated at the rear of the main room and high up you got a good sense of the venue, the mood was electric and the hands in the air highlighted by lasers added to the whole effect.

The resident DJ was doing a grand job in whipping the crowd up into a frenzy and everyone we spoke to was really excited, well up for it and looking forward to the main headlining act of the night, Anne Savage.
You knew when Her Royal Maj was about to take her throne as even the queue for the glow-sticks dissipated and headed for the floor. At this point the DJ booth to us clubbers was what Mecca is like to Islam. Every single person in the house was faced towards Anne, glow-sticks in hand (and a few other unmentionable places) and arms in the air - this was without exception. All everyone wanted to do was prey to the musical goddess. And prey we did, all the way through every thumping tune, every slick mix and every single bass-line. Standing at the back all you could see was a vast sea of arms and UV sticks waving in the air in time to the sweet vibrations. She even seemed to be enjoying herself as much as we were. |

Any other night and the floor would start to clear by 1am, not here. We were still packed like sardines at 3am by which point I decided to make my exit bouncing all the way home whilst planning my next un-missable night at Slinky HQ.
You had to be there. Check out our recent chat with Anne below.
