Sundissential V Goodgreef V Frantic Review

New Year's Eve @ The Birmingham Academy!

Hot, sticky and nuttier than squirrel pooh… no, I’m not talking about your Moms’ homemade Christmas pud, I’m describing something far more jaw-jitteringly jolly - Sundissential on New Year’s Eve!

When the hard house club joined forces with two more of the toughest clubs in the biz, Frantic and GoodGreef, Birmingham Academy was bursting more than your Gran after a bowl full of sprouts! Yes, the epic trio pulled in the punters for yet another wild party.

The atmosphere was rip-raw rough and tough as Eddie Halliwell thrashed the turntables with his thunderous tunes.  Our eager feet ploughed through the sound maze as Adam Sheridan took over.  Although he couldn’t match the scratch-masters’ set, he kept our spirits suspended in mid-air.

Unable to resist the Funkissential lounge, we wandered in and promptly let our hips have free rein.  We got funky to "Get Funky" and lost ourselves in the groove-some baseline of "California Dreamin’".  Funkissential really has something special about it and let’s face it; it must have, to be able to rock the hard house revelers as much as it does every week.

Back in the main room, everyone was bubbling in anticipation of the New Year countdown.  We were all united and at the stroke of midnight, as red and yellow balloons rained down upon us, we hugged those near and dear to us and random strangers too, because the Sundissential crew is really just one big happy family!

Paul Kershaw was our first DJ of 2003.  Our feet bounced with the beats as the liquid heat from our enthusiasm dripped down the walls.  Later, Rob Tissera flexed his musical pecs and showed us the wonders of his box of delights.  As the madness continued into the early hours of New Year’s Day, it was Charlotte Birch whose turntable antics shook the dancefloor and made pulses race, though she managed this even before putting on her first record, as the guys who saw her in "that amazing top" will know.

The night was without a doubt, one of the best New Year’s Eve bashes I’ve been to. The atmosphere was overwhelmingly warm and friendly and the DJ line-up was hotter than your average Christmas turkey.

However, by 5am we were cream-crackered and decided to go cold-turkey on the unstoppable crowd.  Of course many would have gone on to Evolution, Sundissentials’ awesome Leeds venue, to prolong the celebrations as much as possible.  Looking back to the popularity of past Sunny shenanigans at this venue, it’s easy to see why thousands of fluorescent, fluffy followers head up there whenever they get the opportunity.

All in all, Sundissential has enjoyed yet another year of full-on debauchery. Although it seems to have had more venues than J. Lo has had prospective husbands, the constantly changing scenery has proved an attraction in its own right.

The Sundissential team, the club itself, the high-quality DJs, and most importantly, the loyal members, have all made this legendary clubnight survive this years’ clubland rollercoaster ride unscathed.  Roll on 2003, ‘cos if it’s anything like 2002, it could be Christmas every weekend at Sundissential!

Our special thanks to Lauren Pritchard-Gordon for the review & to everyone at Sundissential for making her feel sooo welcome!
