DJ MAGAZINE TOP 100 2002

AND THE WINNER IS....
TIËSTO
The wait is over. The Dutch trancemeister has
done it. Beating some of the biggest names in dance music to the No.1 spot, the
new undisputed king of the dancefloor is TIËSTO. An unprecedented victory
for one of the UK’s best loved DJs points decidedly at the popularity of trance.
He's the first
non-Brit ever to scoop the award.
There’s been an amazing response to this year’s Top 100 DJs poll. The vote was
20% up on last year’s total, with an incredible 38,481 of you
taking the time out to participate in the only poll that matters. Outside the
UK, we received votes from 64 different countries - from China to Canada, Poland
to Panama, Kosovo to Kazakhstan, Italy to Iran, Belgium to Bahrain. Dance music
is truly an international phenomenon now, and this is reflected in the increased
international flavour in this year’s chart.
Going Dutch:
This year’s poll is indicative that big room
trancers are still rocking the dancefloors and the theme is very much a Dutch
one. Fellow Dutchmen Armin Van Buuren and Ferry Corsten have also
whammed into the Top 10, whilst Marco V is the highest climber - up 56
places. Trancer Johan Gielen has blasted in at No. 50, and red hot prog
don Sander Kleinenberg holds steady at No. 15. The Dutch have made a real
impact in 2002.
With Tenaglia sliding, no Americans feature in the Top 10, although a fifth of
the 100 are from the North American continent. Although the big boys Sasha,
Digweed, Oakey, Cox, Van Dyk and Jules all hold their Top 10
positions. But it’s the ‘newer’ territories for dance music that have thrown up
some surprises. South America’s premier DJs - Hernan Cattaneo from
Argentina and Marky from Brazil - have had incredibly good years,
reflected in their impressive poll showings. And techno whizzkid Umek
from Slovenia has blasted into the chart, trailblazing the expansion of the East
European dance scene in recent times.
There are 19 new entries, 5 re-entries and 5 non-movers this time around.
Ex-pat Japanese tribalist New Yorker Satoshi Tomiie is the highest new
entry, in at No. 30, closely followed by bright young Brits Eddie Halliwell
and James Zabiela.
Other welcome new additions to the chart include Tom Stephan, Terry Francis,
Layo & Bushwacka!, Stanton Warriors, Hybrid, Tim Deluxe and Misstress
Barbara. Tom Middleton, Smokin’ Jo, Gilles Peterson, Alan Thompson
and D.A.V.E the Drummer have all returned to the Top 100 this year,
demonstrating that a departure from the chart doesn¹t necessarily have to signal
a career end.
The DJ Magazine Top 100 Party rocked Fabric on
Thursday night (31 October), we arrived in time to see Freq Nasty, getting well,
Nasty I suppose, these tracks were some of the most Bass heavy, Phat beats with
Electro and Punk Metal elements bordering towards Techno... whatever it was it
was f*cking wicked! Also Argentinia's Hernan Catteneo stepped up in the
main room to distribute his Tribal, Progressive chuck of the action.. The Big
Beat Boutique regulars Plump DJ's delivered some refreshing Hip-Hop flavours,
understandably dubbed the Big Beat Elite. Tom Middleton also played an
astounding set of varied choice tunes, racing through many genres delighting the
crowd every time.... Lots of drinks later & it's going off - apparently Kylie's
ex James Gooding was looking a bit wasted as well!
Who knows what 2003 will bring?
